The poster has been selected to publish an extended version in the Journal of Surface Investigation.

Abstract: The motivation for this research is to understand the residual stress profile developed after a quenching treatment in cylindrical samples of aluminium alloys. It has been considered two cases A high yield stress alloy and small cylinder size (‘P’→ϕ 12 mm, h 25 mm), namely AA 2014 alloy and a low yield stress alloy and large cylinder size (‘G’→ϕ 25 mm, h 60 mm), namely AA 5083 alloy Both samples underwent a T 4 treatment solubilization at 806 K/ 120 mins followed by quenching in water at 293 K COMSOL Multiphysics FEM Software was used to develop a coupled thermo mechanical model that considers the temperature dependence of yield strength, Young modulus and thermal expansion coefficient, to obtain the residual stress The mechanical and thermal response of materials investigated was obtained from compression tests and from literature data. Finally, the FEM result has been compared with experimental data obtained from neutron diffraction measurements, collected on FSD instrument at the FLNP, in Dubna Russia, and analysed assuming that a parabolic residual stress profile is developed.

From October 12 to 16, 2020 the International Conference “Condensed Matter Research at the IBR 2” has been held in Dubna, Russia, where Micro_stress has presented the paper “Residual stress distribution after a quenching treatment obtained by neutron diffraction experiments and FEM simulation”.
